Follow Detective Markus Steiner through a Europe in crisis. The Great Depression has brought fortunes crashing down, but an even darker threat is rising—across the border in Germany, the NSDAP is ascending to power, casting its shadow over the continent.
Switzerland maintains its neutrality, but cannot escape the tension. In Bern's cobblestoned streets, old money collides with new desperation, and the city becomes a crossroads for those fleeing, those plotting, and those profiteering from Europe's upheaval.
Amid this gathering storm, the timeless motives remain—greed, fear and jealousy still drive men to murder. Behind respectable façades, secrets multiply. And one detective must navigate an increasingly perilous world where the line between politics and crime grows ever thinner.
I loved this book from the very first pages. Dark, moody, atmospheric settings that evoked a feeling of Carlos Ruiz Zafon, and with a classic double act of detectives I was invested immediately. Hard to believe this was a debut. Had to double check when I realised... can't wait to see what comes next. Great story... highly recommended.

Fall from Grace is a richly atmospheric historical crime novel set in the 1930s in Bern. Markus Steiner, a freshly promoted detective, investigates a series of deaths, and it turns out that they are part of a larger conspiracy. Unexpected twists keep the plot suspenseful throughout, and the historical backdrop—with the era’s social, economic and political tensions—is portrayed convincingly. The characters are nuanced and credible, adding additional depth to the story. All in all, the novel impresses both as a gripping crime story and as a portrait of a turbulent era, making it highly recommended for all fans of historical suspense fiction - can’t wait to get my hands on the sequel! - J.K., Switzerland.
This is a compelling story with many interwoven plot lines, along which the newly promoted Detective Steiner must find what he believes holds the truth. While placed in the 1930s, the story could well make a good conspiracy today. John Millard's debut novel is a lively start to what I believe promises much more suspense and action - and more Steiner cases.

Excellent compelling read, the author makes you feel you are there with the characters in the city of Bern. The plot thickens as you get deeper into the book. A must read. Can’t wait until the next episode in the Markus Steiner series.

For a first time author, this is an absolutely banger of a thriller from start to finish. If you like the Bernie Gunther novels by the late Philip Kerr you will love this. The writing and characterisation are very, very similar. I was lost in the story and characters within the first chapter as it reads really well and doesn’t flag at all. The storyline is filled with twists and turns which keep you on your toes. The author also captures the time period brilliantly, with some great details about life in Switzerland and the police force. Looking forward to the next one! - Broomster, UK.
Finished reading the book in 1 day... An outstanding reading experience. Great book, interesting (and not too simple) plot, fascinating personalities, and a great insight into the 30’s Bern / Switzerland. I look forward to reading John's next book, and I hope he is already talking to Netflix to produce the first season of Detective Steiner. - Amir, USA..
